If you are a candle lover and you spend a lot of money on candles you might consider making them yourself. It is easy to make scented jar candles. Once you learn how to make them you will be surprised at the money you save by making them yourself. They are also an excellent way to illuminate your home and provide aromatherapy methods too.
To start off you will need a jar. There are three primary sizes of jars that can be used. Some people like to use frosted glass jars because they illuminate differently than a clear glass jar. You can use whichever you prefer. Decorating the outside of the jar might be a consideration too. When you decorate the jars it can give off a 3D design when the candle is lit up. You also might consider personalizing the jar with your name, a date, or something else. Another great idea is to use a jar that has the look of a mug. You can reuse the jar as a mug after the candle is burned or you can make another candle.
Glass bottles are another favorite to use. This is because you don’t have to go out and buy a jar you can use an old wine bottle as you finish. Rather than throw your bottles in the trash, use them for scented jar candles. In addition, they have a cool looks that you don’t normally get with a traditional candle.
When you use a bottle for a jar candle it is important to wash it thoroughly. Be sure to get any glue from a label completely off of the jar. This isn’t important if you are going to affix your own label. Don’t add your label to the jar until you have finished making your candle. If you do when you pour in the melted wax the label will only fall off of the jar or bottle.
Now you want to think about the wax. The best way to make scented candles is by using the single pour wax flakes. These work best if you are trying to achieve a specific color of candle and they will blend the best. You need to consider the fragrance oils you want for the candle too. You want to purchase oils that are ‘raw’. If it says raw it means that the oil isn’t diluted with any other type of oil. This is the strongest and will put off the best scent for jar candles. In addition, you don’t need to use as much oil in the wax.
A wick that has a zinc core is usually a favored wick. Remember that zinc cores can burn toxins though. This might make you want to consider an uncored wick or a cotton braid wick. The think about a zinc core is that it burns slow which increases the lifetime of your candle. The cotton wicks burn at an acceptable rate too.
Pour the candle flakes in a glass container and melt in the microwave. Add dye for coloring of the candle at approximately 160 degrees. Let the wax cool a little and add the fragrance oil and stir the wax. Add the oil until the candle is at the strength you like. Use a wick holder stick and put the wick in the middle of the jar. Pour in the wax and let it sit until the wax is dry. The last thing you will need to do is trim the wick to the desired length.
